Yep, reality is much harder, then we know.

Glad to hear you made it alright. So, the people that would have robbed you and wanted to siphon the gas out of your tanks, did they go away after you shut the store down? Seems like they would have stolen everything the minute you left.

Did you have backup power?

:rolleyes_m: One LEO per 35,000 civilians here in the US.

Imagine the food and fuel riots when TSHTF for real...wild in the streets wouldn't even come close to describing the carnage.

Neighbor against neighbor, mobs against merchants...and every LEO that has any sense is at home protecting his/her own family.

Yep...just let them hear a rumor Wally World has a few groceries left and prepare for a riot...guns and knives optional, but recommended.

The thread that holds sanity and morality in check here in the US would snap in about 24 hours max...after that anything goes.
It's not like the criminal element gives a crap to begin with, but remove the deterrent of law enforcement and ordinary people can and will justify committing extreme criminal acts as a matter of course.

I personally have zero faith overall in humanity or the religious values
they claim to believe in and practice.
Once you're faced with starvation of yourself and your family... theft and even murder becomes justifiable to survive.
Those that make the mistake of believing urban warfare can't happen will be the first casualties...failure to shift into full awareness of the need for serious self defense will more than likely guarantee you a slot on the primary casualty list.

"War children...it's just a shot away...just a shot away."

Re: I LEARN A LITTLE THIS WEEK

Our power was down about 15 hours where I live, but there are some in Ohio that are still out after a week. I too learned some lessons just from those few short hours. First, due to summer mowing, I was low on fuel for the generators. Second, one of the generators is too small to run both the refrigerator and the freezer.

The power went out about 6:30 PM and I waited until 9PM to go for gas. I didn't get enough. By the next morning, with the power still off, I went for more, this time I took all my spare cans I had handy. While there I decide to see if I could pick up another larger generator. I was lucky to get the floor display model at Sam's.

About an hour after I got home and had switched to the new generator, the electric came back on. I realized from this experience that trying to generate power to survive is only a short term cure for what might happen the next time. I also felt fortunate that the only damage we sustained was to two of our roofs, no other damage or problems except we had no running water.

Observations;
Need to keep more gas on hand.
Need to find a way to cut back on the need for refrigeration.
Need back up plan for a sustainable supply of water beyond the small supply we keep on hand.
Need a coffee pot percolator for the gas stove.

I believe as you that people in our country are going to be extremely surprised with what is going to happen. Perhaps surprised is too mild.

The entitlement syndrome foisted upon this country by the guv will come into fruition.

It will not be good.

people with out nothing are crazy , I WELL REPEAT CRAZY , THEY THINK every thing is FREE

you alll need a plan

I lost power for two days this time, two days the prior week. I discovered some deficiencies in my planning.

But I don't believe any of us will be ready. Except perhaps folks like the bushes down in panama.

Even those who believe they know what is about to occur will be overwhelmed.

It will be a tremendous re-awakening to reality for the american culture.

Coming to your neighborhood soon.

Re: I LEARN A LITTLE THIS WEEK

My area has done pretty well when its lost power for several days. The grocery store blocks off the perishables, gives its cashiers pocket calculators, and stays open. Neighbors help each other with downed trees or flooded basements (we're in the city, but many of the people in my neighborhood have lived here for decades and most of us know each other). The last time we had a lot of trees down, a Mexican man who barely spoke English and his son drove around the neighborhood with a chainsaw, clearing roads and driveways (for free).

Of course, most anyone can get through a week with no electricity. If the power was off for good and the food was running out, I have no doubt things would eventually start getting ugly.

Good thread Mick... glad to see you posting here again. Also glad you and yours are ok. This thread is invaluable to those of us that don't have the constant weather reminder of how bad things can get on short notice. (The beginning of autumn near the CA desert isn't exactly volatile... it was foggy this AM so I couldn't ride my scooter to work...)

Something keeps telling me the that no matter how prepped I think I am, it ain't good enough. So I keep buying, and storing.

Just ordered 60 gals worth of water storage today... maybe should have been 120... what's enough??

Bankster and .gov a$$holes...why can't they just play nice?

depends on water usage, rain fall, and how much water you can draw from your well. I am taking it that during a SHTF situation you aren't going to be using a hot tub or pool.

I would start with the 60 and then every now and then test out your system by turning off your grid connection. Eventually you want to get to the point where you don't have to turn on the grid connection unless you want to use the luxuries of water (ie. maintaining a lush law, 600,000 gallon olympic pool, spa etc)

Install a rain water harvesting pipe to that barrel.
Install low flow faucets and shower heads. Maybe consider getting a low flow toilet.

Also make sure you stock up on those 5 gallon drinking water bottles from arrowhead or whatever. You don't want to use tap water for drinking.

I recommend everyone to turn off the electric grid connection and water grid connections to see what it will be like.

etc.

lol yup. It is pretty interesting to see the advances in renewable energy technology. Thin-film solar voltaics look very promising. Hopefully they keep advancing to bring the prices down. Do realize however that during SHTF scenario any liquid fuel will be super hard to come by. You'll have to make your own ethanol if you want to run a car. As for electricity, IMO during a SHTF situation the best source would be to have either a steam engine or sterling engine because both those engines can run on solid fuels such as wood (good luck finding one of them though!). We all know that during any disaster there is tons of wood everywhere, either damaged homes, fallen trees, broken fences you name it.

Thanks for the tips, good info... point definitely taken. I live in basically a desert, so... rainfall is not so much.
